Gert Dooley has been assisting her brother Hiram for years, test-firing the guns he repairs. Over time Gert has developed an uncanny knack for accurate shooting.
After the discovery of the Sheriff’s murder, Hiram’s best friend, Ethan Chapman, was railroaded into taking the job of sheriff. What did Ethan know about sheriffing? What did he know about solving crimes especially ones as severe as murder? Ethan feels lead by the Lord so he preserves but crimes continue to plague the small town of Fergus.
With a murderer on the loose, the ladies of Fergus are scared. One of the ladies asked Gert for shooting lessons and soon the "club" grew to almost more than she could handle. But she was glad to be helping the ladies and soon their friendships grew and their aims improved.
Gert had an idea. . .why not have the Ladies Shooting Club members help the sheriff patrol the town. Gert convinces Ethan that it would be a good idea. Not all the men in town thought so but the ladies were doing a good job and with more and more crimes committed around town, Ethan needed all the help he could get.
Gert and Ethan are seeing more and more of each other through all of the town’s problems and Ethan is seeing Gert in a new light, not just his best friend’s sister. But Ethan has his own demons to fight and is not sure about a long term commitment. Will Ethan be able to release the demons that have plagued him and realize that he can have a wife and family? Will Gert and Ethan let God lead them, not only to stop the crimes but to allow their friendship to grow into something more?
The Sheriff’s Surrender is a cute story of mystery and inspiration with a little romance thrown in. I would have liked to have seen a bit more romance develop between Ethan and Gert (or Trudy as he calls her). Even at that, it kept me glued to the page, wondering what would happen next and who the culprit(s) were.
Susan Page Davis has a way of describing the scenes so they come to life with strong human-like characters. I expect the next book in the Ladies Shooting Club series will further develop Ethan and Gert’s relationship as well as some of the other characters. I enjoyed The Sheriff’s Surrender and look forward to the next book in the series.
