Reid Buchanan had lived the high life. As a sports hero, he got to visit every important area of the United States. He got to dine at any restaurant he wanted to on a moment’s notice. People everywhere loved him but it was all the women who were fun. He was a playboy extraordinaire and he felt like he loved them all well and thoroughly.
Imagine his surprise when he read an article in the morning newspaper about him which said "Fame, absolutely. Fortune, you bet. But good in bed? Not so much." This got his blood boiling because this was so not true. He was good—very good and had lots of testimonials to prove it. As he continued to read the article, he found that the reporter also said he didn’t follow through with his fans and charity events. None of this could be true. Could it?
The reporters are all closing in around him so he needs a place to hide. His grandmother, Gloria, raised him along with his siblings. They all resided in the area but none of them were close to her. Gloria had gotten rather grumpy (I’ll be nice with that) as she aged and had pushed them away. However, since she just got out of the hospital and is laid up, Gloria can’t get past the first floor which means he has the upper floor to himself. The perfect hide-away.
What he hadn’t counted on was Gloria’s day nurse, Lori. Sure Lori may think he is cute (okay devastatingly gorgeous) and may even think he is nice from time to time. However, she is also a straight shooter who tells him like it is. She also creates a need in him to be more than he has been and all that he could be.
Lori on the other hand brings her own baggage to the table. She is the plain Jane of the family because her sister is downright gorgeous. Lori has had to work hard for everything she has in life and has no problem being honest with others. Her only problem is in being totally honest with herself.
I loved how Susan Mallery created Sizzling. Every emotion is laid bare in this work. The reader will chuckle at the banter between Gloria and Lori as Lori tries to get her patient to do what she should to get better. The reader will cry as she reads about the story playing out between Lori and her sister (I will leave it for you to discover). The reader will be touched as Reid tries so hard to become more and not just so Lori will love him.
Sizzling truly lives up to its name. The creativity of the author sizzles on the page; the tension between Lori and Reid sizzles off the page; and so many more.
