Kitala Bell is an incredibly talented fiddler. Unfortunately for Kit, her talents extend beyond music. She sees murders of people before it happens. She can see it on their bodies and knows how it will happen, but not when. Perhaps it is good that she can’t see her own death and that it’s coming for her now.

M’cal is from the sea and is the one chosen to kill Kit. However, something in her music causes him to want to fight against his magically induced orders and protect her instead of kill her. When they decide to work together to free each other, it may turn their lives around or get them both killed.

What a fascinating tale! I have not read the other books in this series, but it is pretty seamless for a new reader. Ms. Liu gives us enough details to understand what the Dirk & Steele detective agency is and does to not need the prior books. However, those who have read the books will be pleased to meet up with some favorite characters again.

I found the book started sluggishly as we tried to get through all the witchcraft, murders, second sights, etc. Once we had the background information, the book really came together and moved along like water flowing from a mountain stream until we were swirling into a tidal wave ending. I can not do anything that would hint at the end of the book and the surprises lurking there. Just know that books mirror life in the respect that things aren’t always as they seem.

I also thought this book would be excellent for those who are new to paranormal romance or for those with weak stomachs. While there were a few violent moments, it wasn’t the gore that is found in other books of this genre. It’s also about the most handsome merman you will ever meet. What’s not to love about a great-looking man who can swim with the dolphins? I think the current Dirk & Steele readers will love this latest addition to the series.
