Isabel Valenzuela was not living the life she had imagined. She had known deep down when she married Rico that there would be danger involved because of his career in the border patrol. She just hadn’t expected it to hurt so much when he died or for it to take some long to find a "normal" life again. Just when she decides that life needs to be moved from Del Rio to San Antonio, her life takes a turn that she could never have imagined.

Eli Carmichael had worked with Rico guarding the U.S. borders and was drawn to his widow, which wasn’t exactly what he was looking for out of life. He wasn’t completely sure if it was his own grief that drew him to her out or the attraction he couldn’t deny. In spite of his dilemma though, he found himself turning to Isabel when he got into a situation he couldn’t figure out.

While working in an orphanage south of the border, Eli stumbled upon a little girl who couldn’t hear and was terrified and alone. Who better to care for her but Isabel and her son, Danilo, until Eli could figure out what had happened in her life to create this fear. The closer he got to his answer regarding her, the more danger was created in the life of this little family he had created and the more involved his heart became.

Elizabeth White has hit it big again with "The Texas Gatekeepers" and Sounds of Silence. I have to admit that my favorite character was not the hero or the heroine but a little girl named Mercedes. Don’t get me wrong, Elizabeth has created a strong couple to draw to. Eli and Isabel show great courage and respect for each other as their relationship grows and develops. Eli is willing to give her the space she needs to say goodbye to her husband in her own way. Isabel displays great wisdom in understanding Eli’s fears as well. Elizabeth has created a relationship that draws on each individual’s strengths but also their weaknesses to pull together two halves to make a whole. They came together by finding themselves and bringing that courage to the relationship along with a friendship.

Even though I really enjoyed getting to know these two characters, I really enjoyed the little girl who brought them together at last. Mercedes is a child who your can vividly and easily create in your mind. You can see this Hispanic child, slight and a bit on the small size for her age. The glow of her hair, once it is clean and brushed, is grasped along with the sad eyes that have seen too much. With these, however, comes the heart tug as you begin to understand the fear she has experienced along with the uncommon strength she will exhibit to protect the people she comes to love.
