Fairy Tale Cupcakes is a fledgling business and Melanie Cooper’s dream. She runs it with her best friends and partners, Angie and Tate. They’ve known each other for years, since sixth grade, and nothing can tear their friendship apart. At least nothing could until Christie Stevens came into the picture. Unfortunately, Tate is engaged to Christie.
For the life of them, Mel and Angie can’t understand what Tate sees in Christie. She’s grasping, manipulative, rude…you get the picture. It’s for the sake of their friendship that Mel agrees to bake their wedding cupcakes. There’s just a couple of catches; Mel has to come up with five original flavors and she must sign a contract giving up ownership to the recipes.
Mel is angry. The demand is unbelievable! If she can’t talk Christie out of the contract she’ll bite the bullet for Tate’s sake. However when Mel goes to meet Christie to discuss the flavors, there’s simply no talking to her. Because she’s dead. And she’s clutching one of the sample cupcakes.
So what is Mel to do when she’s the prime person of interest? Lose her business? Go to prison for something she didn’t do? No…while she may be scared spitless she takes a few dozen deep breaths and fights and digs and questions to find the killer herself.
With a mystery set in a retro-decorated cupcake bakery you’d think the story would be light and sweet. It is, but that’s only the icing on the cupcake. Add to the batter business rivalries, potential love interests, and an in-denial mother. And for additional flavor, a definite sense of urgency as Melanie attempts to clear her name and save her business. There’s plenty of action as she takes the investigation into her own hands.
Sprinkle with Murder is a fun yet finely crafted mystery that’s fast paced and oh so entertaining.
P.S. Jenn McKinlay is aka Lucy Lawrence, author of, Stuck on Murder (the first installment of the Decoupage Murder Mystery series), which this reviewer thoroughly enjoyed, but did not review.
