Simon Melmain, Earl of Falconer, is chief enforcer for the
Guardians, a group of mage families. Simon has tracked down Lord
Drayton and intends to strip the evil mage of his powers.
Unfortunately, Simon falls into Drayton's trap and is turned into a
unicorn. Drayton plans to kill Simon as a unicorn and take his horn,
thus taking Simon's powers to use as his own. Fortunately, Simon
escapes, but Drayton orders his men to recapture him. Lord Drayton's
men use Meg, a young, simple woman who has been Drayton's prisoner, as
bait for the unicorn. Meg's innocence attracts the unicorn and he is
captured. Meg manages to help the unicorn escape, but he is wounded in
the process. When Meg's blood accidentally touches the unicorn's blood,
the unicorn is transformed back into Simon. Simon realizes that Meg
isn't what she seems. She is actually a powerful, but unskilled mage,
who is being kept ensorcelled by Drayton so he can use her powers.
Simon helps Meg overcome her enchantment but can't completely sever the
link between Meg and Drayton. Simon and Meg, also, discover that
Simon's enchantment has not been completely reversed. They must team up
to stop Lord Drayton before it's too late.
Stolen Magic is the latest edition to Ms. Putney's Guardian series. Ms. Putney creates an interesting alternate universe in which magic exists and mere humans, or mundanes, are completely oblivious to it. The characters of Stolen Magic are complex and human, even though many of them have magical abilities. Meg, who has been mentally abused and used by Drayton, must overcome her fears and learn to trust Simon. Simon must overcome his parents' scandal and seek his own happiness. Lord Drayton is a truly evil, creepy villain, that made me wish for his early demise. All in all, Stolen Magic is magical fantasy romance, which kept me enthralled from beginning to end.
