In 1867 the lives of six teenagers changed forever. They were partially possessed by The Guard. The Guard protects the living from the dead or ghosts that haunt London. On this night The Guard found their perfect candidates in Josephine who became "The Artist", Jane who became "The Healer", Rebecca who became "The Intuition", Michael who became "The Heart", Elijah who became "The Memory", and lastly Alexi who became "The Power." Also on that faithful night they were told of a prophecy and a door that would open when this prophecy was revealed.
In 1888, 21 years into being The Guard, all six—especially Alexi—are still awaiting for the prophecy to reveal itself and for their fabled seventh who is to help them find them and join them as well. The Seventh is part of the prophecy that was foretold to them.
Alexi and Rebecca work and run an institution for above average students, called Athens. Alexi is a teacher and Rebecca is the head mistress. In this year Athens is blessed with the presence of Percy Parker. Percy is an alabaster skinned girl who has lived in a convent her whole life but was sent to Athens to continue her education. When she appears with her visions and use of languages she turns Alexi's solitary world upside down and has him thinking that finally the prophecy is about to be revealed.
Alexi believes with his whole heart and soul that Percy is what they have been looking for all of these years but the rest of The Guard has fallen under the spell of another that they believe is what they have been looking for. The Guard must come together and decide who is their seventh so London and the world is not taken over by the evil spirits that are slowly being released from Hell.
All of the relationships in the book hold a big significance. But the one that forms between Percy and Alexi is the one that held me in its trance throughout the whole book. From the moment they first make eye contact you could feel the power between them. The love they form and have for one another is one of those enchanted loves that go down throughout the ages and keep finding one another no matter what. Then the relationship between all members of The Guard was really fun to read as well. They have been with one another so long that even in the time they live in they have somewhat forgotten what is expected or a lady or gentlemen. I love when characters in books written in the older days go out of the realm for that century. It makes them seem more real or human and you can relate to them just that much more.
I say if you like paranormal with just hint of romance you'll love this book, it also has just a hint of mythology in it to really make the story jump out at you!
