Goldy Shulz has quite enough to think about at the moment. With all the holiday parties and luncheons she has booked to cater, she doesn’t need anymore stress. And seeing supposedly dead Sandee Brisbane certainly doesn’t help. Unfortunately no one believes Goldy, not even her husband Tom, investigator for the Sheriff’s department. Perhaps she is overtired and stressed, but she can’t let it go until she learns the truth. Was the woman she supposedly saw the same woman who killed Goldy’s ex-husband?

When Goldy sees Sandee lurking around the library while setting up for a holiday breakfast she becomes even more confused. Is it really Sandee? But she’ll have no time to wonder about her sanity as moments later the body of former D.A., Drew Wellington is found slumped in a chair in the library.

Being bombarded by people demanding to know what was found on the body, learning that Drew was less than ethical in his high-end map dealing business and had more enemies than friends, and wondering if, how, and where Sandee fits into the puzzle, well, Goldy can’t help but be drawn into the investigation. Not even threats or attacks are going to slow her down from finding out the truth. Yet this crime has more roads and detours than one of Drew’s valuable maps. It’s going to take all her skills to figure this one out.

It’s quite interesting the things Goldy learns from her gossip hungry friend, Marla, and while catering. Things Goldy later ponders. She also does a lot of off-scene/back-story musing, which sometimes slows the reading down. Beware, however, of skipping through these parts. You don’t know what may be crucial to the story and may be a clue needed to solve the murder.

Goldy and her supporting characters are very well fleshed out. You’ll feel at ease with them. The setting and descriptions were thorough enough to place you at the scene yet not overwhelm the reader with details.

This is quite the suspense-filled book. Ms. Davidson intertwines the threads of the story with seeming ease. The drama unfolds layer by layer with a sense of urgency that builds throughout the pages.

If you’ve not read Ms. Davidson’s work before, now would be a good time.
