Eve Dupree is a fashion model who is doing quite well for herself. Now most people who look at Eve wouldn’t have to ask why she is a model. Eve, however, is asking that question. Her mind doesn’t seem to work like other people’s minds so her parents told her early to stick to being pretty because she could at least do that well. Her sister, Denise, got all of the brains in the family. After years in the lime light, however, Eve finds she just can’t take the rat race any longer. So, she picks a small town (Middlesex, CT) and buys a home there. She gives in to her fantasy of inventing and has created a hovercraft. Eve keeps this news to herself because the craft still needs to be perfected and who would believe her anyway.

Charlie Shepherd is who. On his way past her home one day, there is an explosion in her garage and he has to stop and check on what happened. Imagine his surprise when he finds her to be fine and gorgeous. Since he is an electrical engineer, Eve decides to take him into her confidence and ask for his help with the craft. Two problems begin to develop, however. One, they are finding they are attracted to each other which doesn’t play well with their future plans because Charlie plans to leave Middlesex and Eve never wants to leave. Two, the hovercraft must be worth something because someone is trying to steal it and Eve’s research.

I have to stop at this point because I don’t want to go much further into the story. Reason being is there are some plot twists I don’t want to give away or even hint at because they are worth discovering on your own. Talk Nerdy to Me is one of the best overall, all around books I have read in a very long time. Vicki blends romance with intrigue and throws in some scientific logic for pondering and humor to seal the mix. Now I love romance (otherwise I wouldn’t be doing this, right?) and she does a great job of showcasing people’s weaknesses and turning the two weaknesses into one strength. The intrigue is very well organized. Intrigue, when you come to the end, has to make sense in hindsight and this story certainly accomplishes that with its plot. I love a mystery when there are multiple people who could have done it and not just the "butler" (so to speak). The scientific part is an interesting avenue to pursue although I have to admit science was not my strong suit.

The best part of Talk Nerdy to Me, however, is the humor. No, the book isn’t a comedy or farce but the humor runs through the entire book and pops up at the most interesting times. It catches you by surprise and if you don’t chuckle out loud at least once during the book, I would be very surprised. I will give you one hint, look for references to the bakery specialties prepared by Charlie’s mother. Middlesex as portrayed by Vickie Lewis Thompson is definitely a town I would like to visit!!
