The Awakening, the third book in the Immortals series, is an enticing edition to a thrilling paranormal tale. The book tells the story of Kalen, Immortal son to the Goddess Uni and one of five Immortal brothers created to protect the human race from death magic. Kalen’s existence is different than that of his brothers, as he was created only to give protection to his own people, the Etruscans, and not to the rest of the world.

Seven hundred years ago, Kalen was called by his oldest brother, Adrian, to go to battle. Because Kalen left the Etruscan people to help Adrian and the other Immortals, the Etruscans suffered dire consequences. Due to the loss of Kalen’s protection, the race almost completely died out at the hands of death magic creatures, and Kalen’s mother has never forgiven this betrayal. Likewise, Kalen has never forgiven Adrian for forcing him to leave his people unprotected and has not seen Adrian or any of his brothers since the last Calling.

Now, seven hundred years later, the world is again in grave danger, this time at the hands of Tain, the youngest Immortal. Adrian again needs Kalen’s help in the quest to save the world from the threat of death magic and enlists the help of Christine, an American witch living in Rome, to find Kalen and recruit him to their cause. Unfortunately, Christine realizes upon meeting Kalen and explaining the situation, that he has no intention of joining forces with his brothers in battle. Christine thinks Kalen is being selfish, but he has his own reasons that he’s not willing to share with anyone, especially Christine. When she finally discovers the reason behind his rebellion, it has a large impact on her feelings for him and her future actions.

I truly loved The Awakening, and although there wasn’t as much action as I expected, I found that I didn’t miss it. This is a book filled with fiery passion and romance where the focus is not so much on the fight against Tain and the demons, but more on the development of Kalen and Christine’s relationship. This makes sense because it’s only Kalen’s love for Christine and his desperate need to protect her that can ever convince him to go in to battle.

The magical aspect of the book was a bit different than the others in the series and a large part of its appeal. Instead of an abundance of vampires and shape shifters, there were instead fairies, sidhe, brownies, gnomes and elfin creatures that populated a fantasy Scottish setting almost like a fairy tale.

The Awakening is an excellent addition to the Immortals series and has definitely whet my appetite for The Gathering, which I am certain to enjoy if the last three books were any indication.
