After a fall, Amberlyn Lyons loses the baby she was carrying. After a string of miscarriages, the loss of this almost full term child is a grievous blow. Amberlyn believes that her husband Cain blames her for the death of their child. Guilt and feelings of inadequacy compel Amberlyn to flee her husband and home.

An advertisement in a local newspaper seems like a sign to Amberlyn. Her heart goes out to the orphaned children needing a nanny. Amberlyn accepts the offer to look after the children on a temporary basis. But it seems nothing is temporary at Bloodmoon Manor.

Despite warnings from the locals, Amberlyn travels to the fortress like manor. She is appalled at the state of the three children she has come to care for. She cannot believe their relatives, the genetically disfigured Bonavaris family, would neglect their orphaned kin in such away. But are they kin? When Amberlyn meets the scarred daughter, Katerina, she begins to understand this is no simple, short-term assignment. Normal people don’t look after their dead the way the Bonavaris family do.

It does not take Amberlyn long to realize she must escape with the children. But how? They are miles from town, behind locked doors and no one knows where she is. And what of the ‘monster’ that Katerina taunts her about? And is it to late to act when Amberlyn realizes their plan for her?

The Bloodmoon Curse is a freaky tale. As I read I kept thinking these characters are like out of an X-Files episode. I enjoyed the suspense as it slowly wound through the book building up the tension. I don’t want to ruin the story, however I had to go ‘ick’ when I read what was planned as Amberlyn’s fate. Amberlyn, though seemingly a quiet character initially, has a gentle strength and resolve not to be a victim. And, although the character of Katerina is a nasty piece of work, I felt strangely sorry for her towards the end of the book.

There is a strong theme of faith and spirituality through out the book. However, it never comes across as too preachy. It’s more that the characters beliefs are strong enough to overcome anything.

What I liked about this book is it cannot be categorized in one particular genre. There is something for every reader in The Bloodmoon Curse. It’s a modern day gothic tale, where the heroine is battling evil and relying on the power of love and faith to get her through. It’s an excellent read.

After reading this book, all I can say is be careful of any answering any ‘nanny’ advertisements. You may get more than you bargained for.
