Nicholas FitzTodd, Baron of Crane, has no interest in marriage but knows that he must seek a wife after the girl he thought would marry him joined a convent to avoid him. Doesn’t that smart a warrior! Nick begins to work his way through all the ladies at court and when Simone practically throws herself at him, he hopes to find a nice diversion. Unfortunately, they are caught in a compromising situation and the king forces Nick to marry Simone.
Simone knows that her husband hates her because he believes she purposely set out to trap him into marriage. Now she has to try to get him to understand that her brother’s ghost has followed her from France to England.
Nick and Simone are so well suited for each to her. It was delightful to learn all the things about their past that have shaped who they are. We get to become reacquainted with Tristan and Haith (from Ms. Grothaus’ first book The Warrior). Ms. Grothaus dovetails the books together so well that new readers will never know that a book came before this one. Returning readers will enjoy seeing what has happened since we last saw Tristan and Haith.
Once again, Ms. Grothaus has created such a well written and well rounded story. I find her characters to have great depth and she writes them so well that they become real to the reader. I found myself cheering Simone on in her quest to make Nick happy. She’s so strong-willed and pig headed---almost as much as Nick. This pair had me laughing out loud at their antics. Yet the depth of writing comes through when bad things happen to each of them. In these moments, we see to the soul of each of their characters as they react to sorrow. It really completes the story and makes it real to the reader.
