Ian George Angleston Rufford, a younger son, has the misfortune of being sold into slavery by pirates after his ship is taken. He survived only to fall into the clutches of an evil vampiress set on conquering the world. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Rochwell's life has been turned upside down by her father's death. Prior to his death, Elizabeth had traveled with him on archeological expeditions and arranged everything for him. Now, she must face returning to England, where she feels an outsider because of her knowledge and independence. As well as the fact, that she is half Egyptian. Ian, who survived his encounter with the vampiress a changed man, wants only to return to England and seek a cure for his ailment. Ian and Elizabeth meet on the ship bound for England. Will Ian find a cure and how will they stop the evil vampiress?
The Companion is an action-packed love story that kept me intrigued from beginning to end. Ian is a great tortured hero, who has to overcome wounds left by both mental and physical cruelty. He is a very honorable man, who never comes off as whiny. Elizabeth is a strong, intelligent woman, who is very capable and avoids "too stupid" moments. The villain is truly brutal and evil. Be warned this book is not light and fluffy, but intense and sometimes brutal. However, The Companion is a very gripping paranormal romance, which goes straight to my keeper shelf.
