Sloan St. James is either truly Irish, or is absolutely Irish at heart. For someone to have such a complete understanding of family interactions in an Irish clan, you have to be from one. This paranormal is set in a small Irish hamlet where Jack Wolfe returns to his roots. Having lost his only son through a tragic death, he returns to Ireland where he meets Cala McCoy. She is feisty and not ashamed to speak her mind, even if it means risking the blossoming love between them.
Ms. St. James writes an incredibly compelling story. I didn’t know at first what a Dark Plain was. I have learned that the Druids believed that the dead moved to a different plain of existence. This story explores the gateway from the earthly world to the next, dark plain. While Jack is in Ireland, he learns more of one gateway to the Dark Plain located on the land of his ancestors. The family hopes he will right a wrong that took place 800 years ago.
Since I didn’t have much knowledge of Druids or Irish history, I was skeptical of the story holding together. However, I was drawn into this book by the end of the first chapter. For a new author, Ms. St. James writes a compelling story reminiscent of the folklore that was passed from generation to generation many centuries ago. I think that’s my favorite part of this whole book---it’s not a "novel," it’s a masterfully crafted story.
If you are looking for a departure from what I consider to be the standard paranormal romance, you’ll really enjoy Jack and Cala’s story.
