The Immortals are five brothers sent to earth at the beginning of time to keep the balance of living and death magic in tact. In Immortals: The Calling, we are introduced to Adrian, the oldest of the brothers, who has been on a quest for 700 years to find his youngest brother Tain. Adrian did eventually find his brother but the circumstances surrounding Tain’s disappearance and his current lifestyle were not what Adrian expected or could handle on his own. In Immortals: The Darkening, another Immortal brother, Darius, picks up where Adrian left off in the quest to rescue Tain from what seems to be a self imposed hell.

The remaining three brothers are summoned by a calling spell to help Adrian rescue Tain from the clutches of a powerful demon. But Darius, exiled to his home in Ravenscroft for the last 700 years, cannot answer the calling. His mother, the powerful Goddess, Sekmeh, fearful she would lose her son forever if he answered the calling spell, has kept him a prisoner of sorts. Darius has been free to roam the otherworldly realms but has not been allowed to go to earth. However, when he realizes why he was called, to rescue his brother, he defies his mother and forces his way out of his prison. Unfortunately, Sekmeh is in the process of putting a spell on Darius as he tries to leave and the half completed spell causes him all sorts of problems once he descends to earth.

Darius lands in New York City and runs smack in to Lexi Corvin, a shape shifting werewolf who is a bounty hunter when in human form. Lexi, a witch who was involved in the effort to summon the immortals, immediately recognizes Darius and fills him in on why he was summoned. What follows is a fast paced story full of passion, intrigue, and an enormous amount of sexual tension between Darius and Lexi, perpetuated by the coming full moon and the half completed spell that Darius has been burdened with.

The Darkening, written by Robin Popp, was a fun read, not quite as steamy as The Calling, mainly because Darius and Lexi had such trouble coming together. When they did, though, it was sexy and romantic and well worth the wait.

Tain, the rouge brother, was more conflicted in The Darkening, and I imagine that each book following will have him realizing more and more that he does not want his life to end, if only he could break free of the hold the demon has on him.

I very much enjoyed this book, and even though it didn’t have quite the level of intensity that the first book in the series had, it was still excellent and well worth the read.
