Maggie Fletcher’s sister is brutally murdered and Maggie knows who did it. Colin Masters has stalked her sister for months, but there isn’t enough evidence to put him away. Maggie, not wanting the evil man to harm any more innocent women, takes matters into her own hands and issues a false proclamation under oath that seals his fate and throws the monster behind bars forever.
Of course, there are consequences to everything in life and because of Maggie’s lie, her friends and family become the target of a fanatic, and she loses the respect of her one true love. With her life in pieces, Maggie chooses to save her friends and loved ones by assuming a new identity and moving to a small town where no one can find her or her son.
But the shadows have followed her. Someone is stalking her just as they had her sister years before. Has Colin Masters escaped? Or, did she put an innocent man behind bars, leaving the real stalker free to destroy Maggie’s life.
For anyone who likes suspense, Tina Wainscott delivers. I felt heartbreak for Maggie as I watched the people she loved, one by one, turn away from her. I wanted to scream at the bumbling police that – in novels and real life – continue to turn the victim into the "crazy" one. I also liked the fact that the story got more complex as the suspect list grew. A man shows up in Maggie’s new town who seems to be after her heart, but holds a secret that may shatter their new relationship; an eerie teacher at the local school may be terrorizing her son for reasons of his own; and a stranger arrives to rent a room in the house of Maggie’s after-school sitter. The pressure mounts on Maggie as she watches her own son turn against her when he befriends one of the suspects, gets haunted by another, and despises the one who seems to be moving closer and closer to his mother’s heart.
The suspense builds and the mysteries come together well in this cat and mouse game that really begs the question – what wouldn’t you do for your family?
