Picking up where The Parting left off, Nellie Mae Fisher is sticking to the "Old Ways". Most of her family has found the saving grace of God through His Son, but she just can’t do it. Besides her love and beau Caleb Yoder would not accept the ways of the "New Order".

Caleb’s father has put conditions on Caleb’s birthright, the family land. Strict conditions they are, as these conditions are about to tear his heart out. Caleb has been forbidden to see Nellie as his father has no tolerance for those "who’ve jumped the fence" to the "New Order". How will Caleb gain his father’s blessing to marry Nellie and inherit the family land? He feels he needs the land to make a living for his beloved Nellie and their future family.

As Nellie sees many other families and friends torn apart by the pull of the New Order, she also starts to see their faith shining aglow with the Son. Nellie makes up her mind and heart to accept the teachings of the "New Order", in spite of how she expects Caleb to take the news.

Nellie sees God opening many hearts but there are still many who can not turn away from the "Old Ways" and open up to Him. How will God’s grace and loving kindness help Nellie through the turmoil the people of the community are experiencing? Does Caleb love Nellie enough to accept Nellie’s decision to accept Jesus as her Savior and stand against those who would pull them apart?

Though a continuation of The Parting, there are still many unanswered questions. As the first book, The Forbidden, has a strong inspirational theme, that God’s love and grace toward His children gives them all they need. Again, Beverly Lewis shares her incredible knowledge of the Amish which causes the scenes to come to life. Her characters have depth that will make you ponder the strength of your own beliefs and commitment to God.

Even with the unanswered questions the message is motivating. If you’re looking for a gripping inspirational story that will pull at your heart, The Forbidden is the book for you. Eager for the answers, I look forward to the next book in the series.
