In the fourth installment of The Immortals series, we meet Hunter; the beautiful, laid back immortal with an affinity towards animals. Hunter connects better with animals than people, and it’s this connection that first attracts Hunter to Leda.

Hunter is the last of the brothers to be found by the ancient Calling Spell. Although, like Kalen and Darius, he does not land where he’s expected to.

Hunter, for reasons he doesn’t understand, finds himself on the island where former Coven of Light witch, Leda lives. Leda left the Coven under bad circumstances and wasn’t involved the Calling spell to gather the Immortals together. This makes it even more curious that Hunter ended up on her Island.

Hunter has no idea why he was called, or why he’s landed on Leda’s doorstep, but he figures now that he’s there, he might as well take advantage of his good fortune and get acquainted with the lovely witch. And, the two definitely get acquainted early on.

Hunter and Leda’s fun times together are short lived, however, once Hunter discovers the real reason the two were brought together; to save the world from destruction at the hands of not only one of the world’s most powerful demons, but also from Hunter’s own brother, Tain. Hunter has a more personal stake in this than the others, as this demon took something precious from him 1000 years before.

The Gathering brings all the Immortals together in the most touching and emotional of the four novels in the series. This is Hunter and Leda’s story, and their love is not minimized or put on the back burner, but the book is as much about the reuniting of the brothers to save the world and rescue Tain.

Leda and Hunter had an obvious connection from the start, and I enjoyed watching this connection develop in to a deeper passion. There is a scene close to the beginning, the first real love scene actually, that had an intensity and intimacy that proved the strength of this connection.

As always, the secondary characters in these books are great fun, and in The Gathering, all of my favorites from past books are present; Mac, Valerian, Septimus, and Pearl all made themselves at home in Amber’s house. It was fun having them come together and join forces for the same purpose.

I enjoyed The Gathering a lot, although it started off a bit slowly for me. I think I was just anxious for the brothers to finally come together and see how they would all interact with each other. Jennifer Ashley wove each of the characters in to the story perfectly.

I’m sorry to see the series end temporarily but will be first in line to pick up Tain’s book, The Redeeming, when it comes out next fall!
