Owein, a Druid who has been living alone in a Celtic village since
the Romans raided and killed most of the villagers and made slaves of
the rest, finds a Roman woman nearly frozen to death. Clara, the Roman
woman, has come seeking the Druid's visions and aid in finding a grail,
which was stolen from her family. This magical grail has healing
properties, which Clara is desperate to use to save her father. Because
the grail has great power and once belonged to the Druids in Avalon,
Owein agrees to find it and reluctantly agrees to take Clara along for
the journey. Meanwhile, a powerful Druid is using dark magic and plans
to thwart Owein and Clara's attempt to get the grail.
Before I started this book, I found myself feeling ambivalent about another book dealing with Avalon. Was I ever proved wrong! The Grail King turned out to be a rare jewel of a book, which grabbed my attention from the beginning and kept me enthralled until the very end. Ms. Nash tells a legend of Britain and Avalon pre-Arthur, which has wonderful, complex characters, an exciting, adventurous plot, and a great romance. The excitement and adventure of the couple's journey, at times, reminded me of Lord of the Rings, only the romance took equal billing with the fantasy and adventure.
I don't know how I've missed reading Ms. Nash's work before now, but be assured she goes on my auto-buy list. Do yourself a favor and read The Grail King.
