The belle of the ball is hiding behind the potted palms again—but what else can Harriet Vernson do when two suitors are vying for her hand? She cannot help it if her charms drive men to distraction—she would much rather be traveling to Paris. Or Venice. Or Bombay and beyond—anywhere but London.
But the devilishly handsome Lord Beldonis most insistent. He has refused Harriet’s demure younger sister, who would make him a much more suitable bride. But if Lord Beldon will not take no for an answer, he will have to be happy with a maybe. Because for the moment, Harriet would rather have fun…
Unfortunately, Harriet and Beldon can't seem to keep their hands off each other, and with interfering families, other candidates for their hands and a pantomime, will these two misguided lovers ever discover they were meant for each other?
Ms. Laik’s debut novel is what I hope will be the first of many novels by this talented writer. I fell in love with our heroine Harriet on the very first page of the book. How can any woman out there resist a young lady who is using not one, but two men (who would like to marry her) to run an endless number of errands for her during a ball? It reminds me of the games I used to play with my younger sister and her friends. You know the old go get me a sandwich, now I need a napkin, how about a drink routine? All kinds of ways to keep them running and feeling like you’re right there with them when you’re just trying to get a little break from them.
You will absolutely love how this theory backfires on Harriet when she meets Lord Beldon in a surprising way. I found myself giggling off and on with Harriet’s antics and grand plans. When she and Beldon hastily agree to become engaged, they both are looking for ways to release the other. What could be better than Beldon’s totally dysfunctional family hosting Harriet’s family in a country house party? His family members would make the Simpson’s look like the Beaver Cleaver family.
I enjoyed the book and am looking forward to the next book Ms. Laik has coming to us in July. The only thing I found a little lacking was the tendency to slow the flow of the book down with weighty descriptions. It’s not a predominant issue, just in certain scenes. My guess would be this is something that comes with your first novel and I don’t really think it affects the overall flavor of the book. Just wanted to mention it so you can skim a little at those times because the story picks right back up and you will certainly want to finish it.
