The only description I can think of for this book is, "Spell-binding!" Once I started reading, I had trouble putting it down. I am amazed at the writing talent of Ms. Gerritsen. I truly thought this book was a stand-alone until I went onto her website to get some additional information about the book. I went back and re-read the first couple of chapters and while a newcomer would not notice this is a part of a series, I believe a returning reader won’t be bored with the introductions. It’s very masterfully written to keep returning readers interested while still giving new readers the information they need to understand the book.

This is a suspense book delving into the mind of a deranged killer. As we work our way slowly through his sick mind and through his victims, we see a side of life most of us have never experienced. Jane Rizzoli is the seemingly unflappable detective and Maura Isles is the medical examiner. They work together to try to stop this man from killing again.

In looking into the first murder, they find some suspicion cast on Detective Rizzoli’s past nemesis Joyce O’Donnell. Eventually, they learn of a group called the Mephisto Club. The Club exists to analyze evil. They are looking for ways to predict and possibly stop evil in its tracks. They are seeking to prove that Satan lives among us. This bizarre group finds itself in the middle of the murders and possibly they themselves are the targets.

The first couple of chapters were a little jumpy to me until I got the swing of the writing style. We move from past to present at different points in the book. Ms. Gerritsen continues to build the suspense as the book unfolds. I was drawn into the story and was working to solve it on my own.

Without divulging too many plot twists, I want to assure those who are more sensitive to violence that while we are learning about gruesome murders, it’s not done in a gory way. It’s presented in a matter of fact manner, mainly from Dr. Isles who is the medical examiner. However, if the mention of blood gets you queasy, you should be warned.

If you are looking for a bone chilling, page turning, can’t put it down suspense, you have found the perfect book to read.
