Brenda Novak’s Dundee, Idaho series continues with The Other Woman. This time we get a peek in to Liz Russell’s life. And it’s a mess. You know the saying trouble comes in threes? Well that seems to be the case with Liz.

First she meets a jerk on a blind date who criticizes how she reacted to her ex-husband and resulting situation. Then her long lost, estranged father shows up and delivers a punch. And to top it off, her dream of opening her own chocolate shop (The Chocolaterie), based on the move Chocolat, may just go down the drain.

But it turns out the jerk, Carter Hudson, may not be so bad after all. He helps her with her shop (in more ways than one), and whether he knows it or not, helps her through the crisis with her father. Carter may be harboring some painful secrets; he may be intense, honest, and blunt to a fault. But he’s oh-so-sexy. Their budding relationship wasn’t supposed to be permanent, either, it’s just that there’s something about him, something buried deep, that draws Liz to him.

And him to her even though it goes against everything he thinks he wants or needs. He’s got his life mapped out. Wander from place to place, never feel, never love again. But it doesn’t work that way. He’s found something in Liz he never thought to find again. But it may just be too late.

Just when you think the last book of the Dundee series was the best and there couldn’t be another one done better, Brenda Novak goes and proves you wrong. She writes an emotionally packed story about characters and their situations you find yourself caring about. It’s hard not to root for them or to become a back seat driver in an effort to help them along.

Brenda Novak has the gift of involving the reader in her story on all levels. Each book feels richer, more full-bodied.

There’s no need for her to change her voice or style, she seems to have found it and simply made it stronger.
