Silvana Junia is trying to make it home after jumping from her
stepson's yacht and having to swim for safety. Her stepson holds her
uncle's debts and had thought to have Silvana, too. Hoping to get home
without causing another scandal, Silvana is aided by the rich, powerful,
Lucius Aurelius Fortis. Lucius has been summoned from Rome by his aunt
to keep his cousin out of the clutches of a grasping, scandal-ridden
widow. Lucius, also, has a secret mission to capture pirates and their
associates. Lucius goes with his cousin to a party given by the widow's
uncle, little realizing that Silvana is the scheming widow. When Lucius
offers Silvana money to leave his cousin alone, she is outraged and
decides to play the part he has given her.
The Roman's Virgin Mistress is an entertaining, well-researched historical romance with a very unique setting. Ms. Styles immersed me in the Roman lifestyle, and the politics of the story is very believable. As an added bonus, I learned interesting tid bits about the Rome of this time. Lucius and Silvana are a great couple, who have to overcome several obstacles, in order to be together. There is only one portion of the story that didn't ring true. I don't think a prudent person would take the actions, that Silvana did toward the end of the story.
Other than this minor flaw, The Roman's Virgin Mistress is a good historical read, which takes place in an unusual setting.
