The Unfortunate Miss Fortunes is about three sisters; Mare, Dee, and Lizzie. The sisters are witches, all with powers they don’t quite know what to do with or how to make work to their advantage. Ever since the death of their parents thirteen years previously, the girls have been on the run from their evil Aunt Xan. Dee believes Xan killed their parents in an effort to steal their magical powers, and if Xan finds the girls, she will do the same to them. Dee never shares this conspiracy theory with her sisters, but they’ve always known something wasn’t right.

After few undisturbed years, odd things start happening to the sisters that make them think Xan is back on their trail. The oddest being that each sister has all of a sudden come in contact with the supposed love of her life. For Dee, it’s Danny, a famous author’s assistant trying to get information about her parents. For Lizzie, it’s a hot wizard named Elric with a bad attitude and who thinks Lizzie is a menace to the world of witches. As for Mare, she has two men who have planted themselves firmly in her life. Jude, the Vice President of Value Video!! who proves to be not quite what he seems, and Crash, Mare’s ex-boyfriend who skipped out on her five years ago. The girls all have a feeling their dream men are sent from Xan as a trick of some sort, but it does not stop them from falling hard and fast for each of these mysterious creatures.

The Unfortunate Miss Fortunes is a collaborative story written by Jennifer Crusie, Anne Stuart and Eileen Dreyer. I am a big fan of Jenny Crusie’s work, but I had never read anything by the other authors. Each one wrote a different sister’s story, and it was a challenge to figure out who penned which. The writing was flawless and there was no discrepancy in style from sister to sister. I was surprised to find out which author wrote Xan, as each writing style blended so well, it could have been any one of the three.

I had really been looking forward to this book, and it not only met but far exceeded my expectations. I loved all the sisters and their men, but Mare and her ultimate choice (I won’t give it away) were my favorites. Mare is the type of woman I have always wanted to be but never had the guts to be. As for the love of Mare’s life, let’s just say she absolutely made the right choice!

This book is a wonderfully funny, sweet, and romantic story with a brilliant cast of diverse characters, each having their own charm and appeal, even when they were meant to be nasty or villainess. I will always read Jennifer Crusie’s books, but now I will make a marked effort to find books by Anne Stuart and Eileen Dreyer as well.
