Rebecca Gantry has loved Jake Tanner for the longest time. He was the man that rescued her from the prom date from hell. Over the years her feelings for him have gone from a teenage crush to deep, genuine adult love. So when Jake asks her to marry him Rebecca should be thrilled. But she’s not. It seems Jake wants a marriage of convenience. He needs a wife to look after his orphaned niece, Casey, and a woman to run his home. How terribly unromantic.

Jake Tanner knows Rebecca is the perfect woman for him. She is smart, capable and loving. He wants a woman who is hard working and loyal and expects nothing from him other than a roof over her head and companionship. Jake is not looking for love. He does not trust women. He has been burnt in the past and has no intention of repeating the lesson. Sure, he likes Rebecca but like cannot turn to love if he doesn’t want it to. After an incredibly unfulfilling wedding night, Rebecca decides to make the best of her lot and goes about civilizing Jake’s life and home. She may not be able to make Jake love her but at least she can make their lives comfortable. Jake is not sure whether the effect of Rebecca on his life makes him angry or content. Feeling anything for Rebecca wasn’t part of his plan.

When four year old Casey goes missing, deeply buried feelings surface. Rebecca begins to wonder if she is just fooling herself. Jake doesn’t love her so why is she prolonging the agony of her marriage? And is loving someone who doesn’t love you enough? Whilst Jake begins to realize that his feelings for his bride go way beyond like. Has his fear of being hurt again ruined everything with Rebecca? Two loners face major decisions. Can they trust themselves enough to trust someone else?

I loved the introduction of The Way Home. My interest was caught immediately as I wondered what was going on. I could completely understand how Rebecca felt by the non romantic proposal presented to her. Any red blooded woman would feel the same. I read the first book in the series so it was nice to catch up with some of the characters to see how their lives had changed. The thing I like about N J Walters books is that the author gives you great, in-depth background into the characters lives so you understand why they think and act the way they do. Both characters have been let down in life, but only one of them is willing to take a chance.

Being the cynic and city girl that I am, I have to wonder if everyone in Jamesville is always so nice. Maybe, cracks will appear in citizens in the next book. I will be interested to read the further adventures of the people in this heartland town.

The Way Home is a book about just that. It’s about knowing what is home to you and not settling for anything less. The road to a happy ending is paved with a lot of longing and heartache, yet it’s a path you have to travel on to find what you need. If you are looking for a light, heart felt romance to wile away some lazy hours then I reckon you will enjoy the folks of Jamesville.
