Theater has always been a passion of Eleanor Sinclair’s, so it stands to reason when she gets the opportunity to attend (in disguise with no chaperone) she takes it. What could go wrong? It’s only one time. Yet when there’s a slight disturbance near her during the performance and her eyes clash with those of a most handsome man, well, her appetite is whet…for more theater. Not that she’s going to attend again, mind you.
Not only does she attend a second time, but she becomes acquainted with James Bentley, the cause of her previous visit’s commotion, when her rescues her from an annoying yet potential debacle.
She feels funny things at the touch of his hand or the caress of his eyes. To continue perpetuating her charade could mean ruin, but it would mean having to give up getting to know him, give up the theater. No, it’s too much to resist. He’s too much to resist. The pretense goes on, causing Eleanor to spew one lie after another until she’s mired in them.
James is intrigued by the woman in disguise, however he’s sure once he’s had her, his interest will wan. After all, he’s not looking for a wife; he has too many family skeletons to deal with, without shackling himself to one woman for life. Yet the more he learns the more he’s drawn to her.
However, with one moment in time, both of their lives will be changed forever.
I enjoyed reading James and Eleanor’s story, The Wayward Debutante. They both acted within the constraints of their time period (or what we perceive they should be) with just the right amount of author’s creative license. No 21st century attitude in 19th century clothing, which historical romance lovers will truly appreciate.
With the exception of a bit of head hopping from time to time, the flow of the story was evenly paced, the back story dispersed at the right moments, and the emotional connection to the characters within reach.
I look forward to more from Sarah Elliott. She’s definitely one to watch as it appears she not only enjoys writing, but she enjoys writing for the reader’s pleasure and senses.
