Deputy Police Chief Luke Granger arrives at the mall to just do some shopping. However, he is quickly reminded a police officer (especially on in uniform) is never off duty. Just as he is wrapping things up, he is approached to help a woman in the bathroom. He arrives in the bathroom expecting a sick woman but is confronted with a woman covered in blood. Kelly Brown. She can say very little except where she worked. At that location, he finds the entire staff has been murdered and she is the only witness – only now she is gone and he finds Kelly Brown doesn’t really exist.
Kelly Brown turns out to be Amanda Griffin a woman who witnessed a crime long ago and has been on the run ever since. She gives him the information he needs in order to solve the jewelry store crime and then is gone again. Physically that is but she is never far from Luke’s mind.
Three years later, Luke is now the Chief of Police but still gets called in on cases with two of his best homicide detectives, Marsh and Connor. They land a good size case and find they need all the help they can get.
I am going to stop at this point because the plot thickens and twists and turns. One avenue leads into another and especially as you start getting to leads you believe are dead ends only to discuss they re-open in a whole new vein. I would truly put this book towards the top of my all time reading list and I would recommend to Dee to talk with her editors about a TV movie out of this book. Adjectives like riveting, sizzling, intriguing, masterful, suspenseful, authentic, and so many more come to mind. The plot and characters lend themselves perfectly to a screenplay and could easily capture the attention of a wide audience. There is a bit of blood in the beginning as the scene is laid but mainly just alluded to. There is mystery galore. The Witness takes us quite deep into the plot outline but does so without giving away the end before you are there. If you are anything like me, you create scenarios in your head as you read and this creation gives major fuel to imagination. There are so many different ways she could have gone with the "who-done-it" but the way she wrapped it up was masterful.
For the romantic at heart, Dee doesn’t forget about the human aspect of the story. She creates great depth in the characters and what was great to see was the story was seen from all viewpoints and she did a particularly good job with the male point of view. (In fact, my husband is now reading it and this is the first book we have shared in a long time!!)
My hat is off to Dee Henderson with The Witness (and again, think about a movie with this one – it would be great! :-)
