Restless, former soldier Chris Matlock decides he should visit Jenny Bontrager. He met Jenny at the VA hospital when they were both recovering from wounds suffered as a result of the Middle East war. Jenny had returned to her Amish roots and invited Chris to come and spend some time.

Chris had to talk to someone. His military experiences and wounds were very traumatizing and he felt Jenny would be able to understand some of what he went through. But Chris didn’t expect to meet an Amish woman who was outspoken and curious yet kind and pretty. Hannah, Jenny’s sister-in-law, is not sure what to think of this good-looking Englischer; why is he here and what does he really want?

Hannah doesn’t know why but she’s very attracted to Chris. Yes, she’s been longing for a family of her own lately, but how could they bridge the gap between their beliefs? That doesn’t stop her normal outspokenness and curiosity to kick up a notch when Chris refuses to talk about himself.

Chris can’t help his attraction to Hannah but she just can’t keep from asking questions about his past. Chris doesn’t want to talk about the rejection and betrayal he felt from his fellow soldiers; the emotional and physical pain he suffered and scars he carries. Besides the obvious differences between him and Hannah, he’s sure she wouldn’t want anyone with this much baggage. And Chris thinks he may have put his new-found friends in danger knowing the man he helped put in prison promised to come after him.

Will Chris and Hannah be able to see past their differences to what God has in store for them? Can Chris trust God to help him work through his issues and trust Him and those around him that care for him? Will the danger hanging over Chris follow him to Paradise? How will Hannah convince Chris to let her into his life and help him heal?

A Time to Heal is a story of love, forgiveness and healing. Ms Cameron has a unique way of weaving English and Amish life-styles together. Though they are from two different "worlds", love and healing find a way to cover both "worlds" giving Hannah and Chris the promise of better things to come. The characters are written with human quality and realistic emotions.

Since A Time to Heal is the 2nd in the Quilts of Lancaster County series, I have to say that reading the first book would have helped to understand most of the characters better. Even at that, A Time to Heal is a sensitive story that will give you hours of enjoyable reading.
