Jorund Ericsson is a 10th Century Viking on a mission. He is determined to find his missing brother, Rolf, who was shipwrecked off the coast of Iceland. He has been off fighting and returned home to find his wife and twin daughters dead and his father asking him to go find Rolf. On the way, his boat ends up off course and a killer whale that seems to be in love with Jorund is following them. Little does the crew know that Thora (the whale) and Jorund have been communicating. Jorund shouldn’t be surprised when the whale grabs him and holds him in her mouth. But when she drops him off by hurling him over a fence into a pen of other whales, he doesn’t know what to think. He believes himself to be dead and in Valhalla…but he never thought he’d arrive naked on a whale.
When Dr. Maggie McBride, psychologist, takes him as a patient, Jorund’s world is turned upside down. Instead of Valhalla, this 10th Century Viking finds himself in the 21st Century. Will he ever return to his own time? What will his destiny be? The whale spoke to him in riddles about him returning home…will he ever be home again?
Maggie and her twin daughters needed a man—but I think the gods or the ‘One-God’ were a bit giddy when they sent Jorund. He’s a Viking warrior who has lived live for hire. To put him into the 21st Century in Texas is fascinating and funny. But pairing him with control-freak Maggie really makes sparks fly—both in and out of the bedroom.
Jorund is quite the specimen of manhood! And even though he is a bit confused at first, his intelligence shines through in his quick grasp of modern English and his intuitive nature towards those he meets. He is a generous and loving man, although he is conflicted about his desire to return home and his desire to stay with Maggie.
I love Sandra Hill’s Viking time travel novels and this reissue is no different. I hadn’t read this one before, but it has moved to one of my all time favorites. The humor throughout is priceless and I was laughing out loud throughout the entire book.
While this book is loosely the second in a series, it does stand-alone. I do want to read the first story, The Last Viking, as I would love to hear Rolf’s story.
