Sometimes in our busy lives, we need a book to come into our lives to help us to escape from reality for a period of time. We find we need something or someone to remind us we aren’t alone in this world and there is someone looking out for us here on earth. Under Cover of Darkness served as that reminder for me this weekend.

Jack Torres is a border agent and finds himself in a position he never wanted to be in – burying his partner. However, Rico was so much more. He was partner, best friend, brother and mentor in a path to finding Christ. One night on patrol, Jack knew something was terribly wrong and in the end his partner gave his life for that wrongness. In order to capture and bring to justice the people responsible, Jack goes deep undercover in Fort Worth, Texas.

Meg St. John is working hard to prove herself to men who don’t think she can do a job. She is educated and trained as a landscape architect and loves her work. Until the time comes she can make them see how good she is, her position is shift foreman managing the jobs and crews assigned. One major draw back though is her crews seem to keep getting caught by Immigration and deported.

She is working a major job when Sam (her boss) brings her an extra man, Jack Torres. Jack jumps into the work with great gusto and helps her pull everything together as well as acting as her interpreter as she is just learning the Spanish most of her men speak.

Things begin to get complicated once Jack knows for sure something isn’t right within the company she works for and he is determined to find out what it is. Unknown to him, however, Meg is also beginning to get the inkling something is wrong in the way the office manager, Warner, is hiring men and files an anonymous report with I.N.S. Now they both are in danger from "El Lobo".

One of the currents in this story is Meg showing Jack the way back to the Lord. After the death of his partner, Jack gets pretty upset with God and while he doesn’t stop believing, he chooses to not partake of any fellowship. Meg shows him a church is more than just a building. The family of believers takes Jack in and shows him a love he has never felt. The faith he builds and the faith Meg carries is what sustains them through the ordeals they face and brings them closer together.

I was very touched by the way Elizabeth White twined these lives together. She found the method to portray the depth of the characters along with their individual strengths. It was their individuality which made you want to follow the story and keep up with the suspense unfolding but in the end it was the three fold cord of the Lord, Jack and Meg that had you cheering. The scenes are well written and the characters well defined. About the only negative thing I could say about this book is if you aren’t a Christian, you might want to take it a bit slower to take it all in. All in all, excellent reading, whether you are a Christian or not.
