Manny Ortega has never been one to live life the easy way. Born in Nicaragua, he grew up to be a freedom fighter. Unfortunately, a woman distracted him and he ended up a man without a country. Because of being compromised, his superiors sent him to the United States where his background and training led him to a life in law enforcement (after years in the Special Forces). While in the Special Forces, he also created his own family by becoming friends with the Ethan Garrett, who later brought him on as an investigator with E.D.E.N.
E.D.E.N. is a security firm run by Ethan, Dallas, Eve and Nolan Garrett, all of whom were once in special branches of the U.S. Government and all have connections in their own right. However, once you became part of their family, you were family for life. So, on the day Manny’s life turned upside down again, they all rose to the occasion to help.
That day happened when the woman who distracted him in Nicaragua came to him with a story about her son being taken hostage in Sri Lanka. Lily Campora is that woman; the one woman who Manny has never been able to forget or forgive. Now that woman needs his help. He can’t turn her down because it happens that the son who has been kidnapped is also Manny’s son. During the rescue operation, Manny discovers that the time following Lily wasn’t exactly what he believed.
Lily has her own struggle because she believed Manny to be dead after he disappeared in Nicaragua. She was amazed to find him in some news coverage. And while she was struggling to get her heart to believe he was still alive, her son was kidnapped and she knew that Manny was the only one to help her.
Cindy Gerard has done it again. Each time that I think she can’t top the last in the E.D.E.N. series, she proves me wrong. Although Manny isn’t technically a "Garrett," Cindy truly made him a part of their family.
The characters are richly created and bring the emotions of the readers to the forefront. The tension created with the plot line keeps the interest level high and makes the book very hard to put down. Under the Wire showcases Cindy Gerard’s ability to resolve events in a way that leaves the reader agreeing with her thoughts and hungry for the next installment. Very well done!
