There’s nothing like an engagement party. With lots of well-wishers, champagne flowing and a beautiful fiancée, Stavros Denakis feels like he’s on top of his game. Nothing could interfere with his plans—except perhaps his wife. When Tessa Marlowe shows up during his engagement party, he doesn’t know what to do with her. She was supposed to be dead. Since they are still technically married, it makes going forward with an engagement very difficult.
Tessa didn’t realize that four years ago, a real minister performed their marriage ceremony. She thought it was a sham marriage done by a hired man to help her escape the South American prison. When civil war erupts around them, she believes her hero to be dead. She survives and lives with a nun until she is well enough to try to return to her homeland of Australia. On the way home, she sees a photo of the angel protector that rescued her and realizes he’s not dead as she was led to believe. She wants to return the ring he gave her during their fake ceremony. Arriving in Greece at his place, she interrupts his engagement party and finds out they are truly still married, even if they never consummated the marriage.
Stavros is leery of Tessa from the start. He doesn’t believe that she’s anything more than a gold digger looking for a huge settlement. He pursues divorcing her and paying her off to stay quiet. Tessa fights Stavros every step of the way and can’t believe his mistrust of her. As they fight, she learns the iron does sharpen iron. During their fighting and learning about each other, she discovers the unfortunate fact that she has fallen in love with her husband.
Tessa and Stavros are both hiding secrets and wounds that they want no one to see. By protecting themselves, they end up lying to each other. All these lies almost cost them the one thing they each crave most—love.
This was a fast read. While the fighting is serious between Tessa and Stavros, it fosters the making up period. And making up can be fun, too. I loved how feisty Tessa is in the face of Stavros’ wrath. She reminds me of a fighter puppy facing down a big dog. She uses lots of bark and a little nipping to get her point across. I had to remind myself that it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog. Enjoy Tessa and Stavros’ fighting it out!
