Imagine being a medical examiner who has a body awaken on your table? Maura Isles is just this medical examiner. Now Maura is a pretty steady person but this is enough to really get you to wondering about your job. After getting the newly awake young woman to the hospital Maura hands the case off to police officers which is where Gabriel Dean and others begin to enter the picture. Gabriel can easily keep track of this young woman because his now due and beginning-labor wife (also a police officer – Jane Rizzoli) is in the same hospital.

A person might think that just being in labor and having a child would be enough. Not so for Jane Rizzoli – she is always in the thick of things. So, as they are taking Jane down for more testing, the young woman ducks out of her room to show up in the lab where Jane is waiting. This same young woman (without a name mind you) is joined by a guest from the outside world who brings with him the weapons they need to accomplish their task. They take the room’s occupants hostage until they get a session with a specific reporter.

Additional agents show up at the scene and take over with an agenda that isn’t what Gabriel is looking for but it is out of his hands. Jane is on the inside though and the young woman knows she is not getting out of this alive so she gives Jane a clue to what to look for as things come to a head.

I could go on and on but this all happens fairly quickly in the beginning of the manuscript. Intense and fast paced doesn’t even begin to cover this story. Tess has filled these pages with romance, action, and thrills. It will keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat. This is not a nice, quiet, sit down with a cup of tea kind of story. This is a I want my mind to totally escape from the world and hang on for the ride kind of book.

The characters in Vanish are raw and real. There is a depth to them that is really well and makes them easy to relate to. It is also pretty realistic. No, Jane doesn’t jump up from her chair (intensely pregnant, in relatively active labor and in a hospital gown) to yell freeze, police and take out the bad guys. She keeps her head and knows if they find out she’s a cop, she’s done for. This is the type of real I am talking about. Very well done but be ready for fast paced, quick thinking and surprising ending as you start the journey.
