The time has come for Lara of Xy and Keir of the Cat to reach the Heart of the Plains or as Lara has come to know it, Keir’s homeland. This land is a far cry from the Land of Xy from where she comes but along the journey to arrive; she has fallen in love with this Warlord and become his Warprize. Now however, the rituals begin and she must formally make some decisions.

First though, she has to understand the rituals and what is happening on the Plains. There is dissension among the people as to what the future holds for this land. With this friction comes fighting and suspicion. As the journey is nearing its end, Keikai another Warlord meets them. As per the ritual it is time for Lara to come into the camp and begin preparations without Keir. Along the final path, Keikai teaches Lara of the ritual including the fact that the other Warlords will begin their courtship of her. Each of the other Warlords must have a chance to lay out why they would be a good match before the formal ceremony.

Another step in the journey is that Lara must undergo extensive testing and questioning by the Council in order to verify that she is indeed a Warprize. She must find favor and unfortunately a member of Keir’s group who does not like her has come ahead and gotten some of the Council to share his concerns.

Lara must work to overcome the concerns of the Council, must get through the courtship of the other Warlords, and must figure out who her allies are before the final ceremony where she must choose her Warlord along with deciding whether or not to stay in the Heart of the Plains.

Elizabeth Vaughn has carried on and brought to a wonderful conclusion the story of the bond between Lara and Keir in Warlord. Even though it is set in the future, the reader quickly becomes familiar with the dialogue and the descriptions the author uses to set the stage.

The characters themselves are rich and full actors in this play with the emotions displayed showing intense emotions. There is a gentleness that comes during the healing care Lara displays towards those who become her patients and yet there is an almost fierceness in the passion of love between Lara and Keir. Very rich and exciting.

There is one element that is both the up side and the down side to Warlord. The book starts right where Warsworn ends. For a continuation, this book doesn’t skip a beat and quickly takes up right where the other left off. The down side, however, is that if you haven’t read the other two I believe this one would be very difficult to get into; taking several chapters before you were in the swing of things. So, for those of you who love trilogies, Warlord (and its predecessors) is magnificent. If you haven’t read the others, just give it a couple of chapters.
