Ms. Black has created a wonderful new subculture in our present day lives. In her world of vampires, there are the Killers and the Guardians of the Night. Those who are Guardians try to keep the Killers from becoming killing machines. They will tolerate those who only kill the least desirable in society. They try to keep new vampires from turning into Killers.

Cop-turned-PI Carolyn Mathers is still reeling from the shock of being left at the altar three years before. She put her job on the line trying to find out what happened to Gray James. The department told her to cut out the sideline investigation or she’d lose her job. So, she quit and became a top-notch PI. After three years, she’s trying to date again and move on with life. On the way to a date, she has a run-in with a punk and Gray suddenly appears to help save her.

Gray tries to disappear again, but Carolyn tracks him down. He’s being accused of murder and wants to keep Carolyn in the dark. Carolyn digs deep enough to find out Gray and his new friends are all vampires. Can she help him prove he’s not a murderer?? Will she be able to keep her humanity or will working with Gray force her to become a creature of the night???

I was raised on Nancy Drew mysteries, so when I find a romance novel with great mystery and intrigue, it makes me a happy reader. Ms. Black really writes a great plot with enough mystery and suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat. I enjoyed the romance portion of the book, but thought she did better with the mystery and intrigue. I also appreciated the fact that she focused on the feelings and emotions of the vampires instead of on the gore of it all.

For first-time vampire readers, this would be a great book since it isn’t high on the gore factor. Those who love vampire books will quickly become involved in this new look at vampire society. Watchers in the Night sets the tone for a really interesting series of books. I know the next installment in the series is due to be released in May 2007. I look forward to learning more about this subculture in America that we don’t even know exists.
