A man named Cairo is able to summon a beast who has powers to alter peoples behaviors. During a séance for a group of unbelievers, the unspeakable happens. Something goes awry and one of the unbelievers becomes the host body of the beast. A series of ghastly crimes are committed and soon the city of London is under the creature's spell.
Two famous men of that time period come to the rescue and try to solve the horrific crimes. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and The Great Houdini team up for a suspenseful adventure they would never forget. Especially when they find out who was taken over by the beast.
This novel was one I found hard to put down. From the first page to the last word, it kept me wanting to read more. H. R. Knight's detail of characters and setting enables a reader to feel as if they are part of the story. Knight's research on that time period (early 1900's London) and the main characters (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and The Great Houdini) lent a sense of realism to the story.
The horrifying crime committed is one that happens once in a lifetime. Every time I thought I knew who the Beast took over, a new twist to the plot was introduced and encouraged me to read on. H. R. Knight ranks up there with Crichton and Preston/Child. What Rough Beast was a mystery, horror, suspense novel all rolled into one.
I enjoyed every page of it and eagerly await whatever's coming up next from H. R. Knight. I anticipate it will be just as intriguing and captivating as What Rough Beast is.
