The third and final book in the Alaskan Quest Series picks up where the second book left off. This book ties up loose ends from the previous book and wraps up the series. See the reviews of the two previous books in the series.
Leah Kincaid and Helaina Beecham have been waiting for word from Leah’s husband Jayce and her brother Jacob for months. Jayce and Jacob went north by ship to join an Artic expedition and are struggling for survival after they were trapped in the ice. Through the winter and now spring, Leah and Helaina along with their friends in Last Chance Creek are praying and waiting for a safe return.
These months have taken their toll on Leah’s strong faith in the Lord. She knows there is a reason for things to happen but can’t imagine what good could come of this. Leah leans on Helaina and her newfound faith. Through good days and bad they hold each other up waiting for their men’s return.
Good people who took them in and the only "family" Leah and Jacob have known since their parent’s death many years before, Karen and Adrik Ivankov, have made the trip to Last Chance Creek to be with Leah. They are hoping to persuade her to come back with them as winter will soon come. During their visit Jayce and Jacob return, Jacob and Helaina marry and all seems well.
Adrik, Jayce and Jacob make plans to work for the coming railroad in Ship Creek where they move and settle their families. But tragedy will strike again to this extended "family". Karen suddenly becomes ill and eventually dies. Once again the family’s faith is shaken with the death of their loved one and tries to see what good the Lord will bring from this.
Now the family decides to move again – to the home in Ketchikan where Leah and Jacob came to live with Karen and Adrik when they were young. They believe they are being led to open a mercantile and happen upon a man hoping to sell inventory from his store in the north. Jayce and Jacob agree it’s what they feel they should do but will have to leave the family for several weeks to obtain, pack and ship the merchandise.
Ready to return to Ketchikan and just before the ship is to set sail, Jayce is injured and they must remain north until he is well enough to travel. In the meantime, the ship they were to sail gets caught in a severe storm and is lost with no survivors. This is the news that Leah, Helaina and Adrik receive. Leah is sure she can take no more tragedies. Her faith is shaken once again as is Helaina’s. They know the Lord can walk them through this and only He knows how much more they can take. But how will they make it through this?
Tracie Peterson writes this final book with these and many other sub-plots but they all lead back to the theme I believe she is writing – God is in control and will lead you through it all if you stand strong in your faith and trust in Him.
Ms. Peterson’s descriptive writing is once again strong. The scenes are painted vividly and the many characters are again important to bring this series to a close.
I found the many different plots a bit long and went beyond wrapping up the story. With that said, Whispers of Winter is worth the read to the inspirational romance reader. Don’t read Whispers of Winter without reading the first two books, Summer of the Midnight Sun and Under the Northern Lights. The Alaskan Quest Series will give you many thoughts to contemplate and inspire you to seek the Lord as He is in control and will lead you through the trials of life.
