Maddie has dreamed about the same Viking man for years. Her surrogate sister, Amber, and Maddie were raised by foster parents who loved Vikings and taught them all about the Viking era. Both girls came to love everything Viking and even learned the old language. When Maddie comes from Australia to York, England to visit Amber at an archeological dig, her dreams about her Viking man become even more vivid.
Both girls decide to participate in a Viking reenactment. Once they are dressed in period costumes, Amber gives Maddie a necklace she found from the Viking era. Amber bought the necklace because there were two that matched. When the girls touch the amulets together, they are transported back to Jorvik (York) in 879. When they land in the home of a jeweler, he takes their necklaces from them because he believes they are stolen from him. Over time, he learns they are masterful forgeries of his work…but he will not return them.
When they try to get the necklaces back, Amber ends up kidnapped by a ruthless sailor. Maddie must find her friend and vows to continue looking for her forever. The jeweler’s friend, Erik, agrees to take Maddie to the next p ort and see if they can find Amber there. Maddie is thrilled and confused because Erik is the man from her dreams. It’s very confusing because the boat she has seen in her dreams of Erik isn’t really his boat; but she is thrilled to spend some time with the man who has haunted her dreams for years.
Erik is not happy to have a female tagging along with his crew. He also is upset at the attraction he feels for this foreigner with strange speech and outlandish stories. He hopes it isn’t too late to save her friend, Amber. He realizes the chances are they will never meet up again.
From here, as Maddie and Erik get to know each other, she begins to see the sensitive side of his nature. He is very caring and thoughtful and puts her welfare high on his priorities. He begins to see the true inner strength that Maddie has. As he begins to believe her strange tale of a land and time in the future, he begins to think she might be telling the truth. And what can he offer her when she wants to find her friend to return to their own time? What does an ‘old’ country have to offer a modern girl?
Maddie is conflicted and holds herself back from fully enjoying Erik. She wants to find Amber, but doesn’t truly want to leave the year 879. Will finding Amber mean she must return to the present? How can she leave the man of her dreams to do so?
I was totally caught up in this story. Time travel is such an unbelievable concept and I often have trouble following it in a story. I thought Tricia McGill wove a colorful tapestry of time travel. One that makes the reader believe it is possible. The characters are so realistic and have such depth to their character. I was drawn to them and wanted to find out if Maddie could ever find Amber and what she would choose to do about Erik.
The romance that blooms between Erik and Maddie is pure and sweet. When they finally made love, I wept with joy. I wasn’t sure if Maddie would stay with Erik or return home with Amber if they found her. The waiting almost did me in. I can’t tell you what happens, but I laughed and cried to the final page.
A masterfully woven tale that transcends the boundaries of time.
