Her grief has consumed her for well over a year. Mallory Byron’s fiancé Michael was killed in the battle being waged against "Boney." Her family has tried to draw her back amongst the living. They mean well but they just don’t understand.

Adam, Earl of Gresham, has long been in love with Mallory. With their ten-year age difference he wasn’t able to act upon his desire and need for her. When she was finally of age he couldn’t ask for her hand; he was poor. There had been many repairs to make on his home and fallow fields and tenants to tend to.

By the time he was well on his way to solvency it was too late. Mallory was engaged to Hargreaves.

During the Braebourne house party Adam sees just how far Mallory has sunk into her despair. He makes it his mission to bring a spark of life back into her eyes and a smile to her lips. Mallory on the other hand, is fairly loath to mingle amid the guests, even though they are friends and beloved family. She is content to sit and ponder her circumstances in her rooms. But Adam has long since been a dear friend. She can talk to him about anything and he will listen and understand and commiserate with her.

Adam’s daily company becomes pleasing to her. With his insight Mallory slowly begins to see that she can possibly think about moving on and be happy without forgetting Michael or the life they were to share. As the days pass, they form a closer bond than ever. Unfortunately the pain of losing her fiancé doesn’t completely dissipate which in turn, and quite innocently, causes a compromising scandal within the walls of Braebourne house and with its guests.

Now their lives are firmly entwined…Marriage just a short time ago was out of the question for Mallory, but now, with Adam, she can see a future with him. Passion rules their nights. A comfortable friendship is their constant during the day. Yet their future happiness is put into question. Can they trust each other completely? Will love, can love, really conquer all?

What a lush and romantic tale. Ms. Warren squeezes every drop of ink from her pen and then some to give the reader a reading dripping with emotion and sensual tension. At times, brief descriptive phrases or words tended to be a bit flowery for me, yet I chalked it up to adding to the romantic feel of the story.

I must say, one thing I absolutely love and applaud Ms. Warren for is that she writes about couples. Their fears and dreams and concerns and needs. How each half of the whole completes the other. Of course the road to HEA is rocky, yet they fight it out together. After a bit of chest-beating or foot-stomping they meet the conflicts head on, not hiding behind them or from each other. All without the multiple sub-plots and evil-doers interfering every other page. Bravo!

Ms. Warren is truly an author of adult fairytales where the sizzle meets the sigh.

Happy reading,
