Winter’s Awakening is a romantic novel with both an inspirational and Amish twist to it. The story takes place in Sugarcreek Ohio and focuses on a young Amish man named Joshua who has been promised to an Amish woman Gretta.
However, as the novel starts out, both Gretta and Joshua are having second thoughts about their relationship and the future which they feel has been planned for them. They find themselves alternating between arguing and not speaking at all, and find themselves looking elsewhere for companionship.
Gretta starts to become friendly with a man named Roland who shows interest in her and Joshua feels an attraction to his new neighbor, an English girl named Lily who happens to be pregnant. Lily, though attracted to Joshua feels that he will not be interested in her once he learns of her pregnancy.
Winter’s Awakening is an interesting story which interweaves the four main characters and the differences between the Amish and the English ways of life. It delves into the feelings the characters have as people, as well as into their faith and how their relationships are affected by it.
I found this book to be a little slow in parts, although other readers may not agree. It is not my favorite genre to read and that may have played a role in my lack of interest in it. However, it is a good book for someone who enjoys inspirational romances and who enjoys reading a book which is tame by today’s standards. There is a definite theme which involves morality and decision making not often seen in romance novels. The scenery and descriptions of Amish life will be interesting to many readers.
