Lebkuchen (a German spice cookie)

This is a recipe for my all-time favorite cookie that comes to me from my
great-grandmother, grandmother and mother (who adapted the recipe to use standard
measurements and devised substitutions for products that were no longer readily
available after WWII).

Makes: 20-24 dozen

Ingredients:

4 cups sugar
1 cup oleo
1 cup shortening
3 eggs
1-16 oz bottle dark Karo syrup
2-12 oz. cans evaporated milk
1/4 cup vinegar
2 tsp cardamom
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
½ tsp cloves
4 tsp baking soda
14-16 cups flour
1# blanched whole almonds
